Psychotherapy Long Island, NY
“What’s wrong with me?”
“I’m not good enough.”
We are constantly bombarded by our negative thoughts.
It’s like an unending parade of harsh commentary running through our minds that makes us feel bad about ourselves.
How can we feel happy and satisfied…
… if our inner critic is always talking?
Where does this inner critic come from? Who invited it to live in our minds RENT-FREE?
Can you remember messages you received in your younger years?
“You’re such a mess.” “How will you ever get married?” “You’re a lazy good for nothing.”
Maybe the messages weren’t so obvious.
It’s the first day of grade school. Everyone’s wearing the same pink bow… except you… you feel left out and embarrassed. “I’m such a nerd.”
Lea is a successful business owner; she is well liked and admired. At the start of every new venture panic sets in and her mind starts racing. “What if I fail?” Her level of fear does not match her current reality.
In session, Lea explores her childhood and the messages of “not being good enough” she received. She remembers getting no encouragement or positive feedback when she tried developing new talents. Despite her current success, those early messages continue to plague her.
Those early voices and comments become ingrained as our internal voice.
Is it any wonder that we feel such discontent?
Life is busy, and demanding and full. We’re pulled in so many directions and have so many obligations.
Conflict in your marriage. When you think you’ve resolved one issue, another one takes its place.
Trouble with friends and family. Nothing you do is ever right or good enough.
Catering to your child’s endless needs, and worries about the direction your life is headed…
Life becomes overwhelming.
And we start to break down.
It can manifest as anxiety or depression. Stress, avoiding whatever we can, and isolating ourselves from those who love us.
This isn’t the life you envisioned for yourself.
On one hand, it may seem easier to just stay the course and continue living as you are. Who has time for self-care, anyway?
But on the other hand, can you really continue this way?
